Why isnt brazilan jujitsu a olympic sport, and will it ever be?

i think it would be great if bjj was an olympic sport|||Jake Lo is actually completely wrong. There is an international governing body. It’s called the IBJJF. They have been around for decades. They hold world, Asian, Pan American, and European championships every year. They have clearly defined rules. There are regulations on uniforms and who can be an official. The IBJJF has been working to get BJJ in the Olympics for a long time now.

BJJ is not the same set guys from UFC/Pride. BJJ has its own set of stars. Look at guys like Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Marcelo Garcia, Andre Galvao, Robert Drysdale, Roger Gracie, Kron Gracie, and Ryan Hall. All these names are huge in BJJ and have never fought in the UFC or Pride. All of them made there names in BJJ. Also, their hasn’t been a Price FC for a long time now. The Pride FC organization was bought by Zuffa in early 2007.

Lots of countries participate in BJJ. There are world champions from the US, France, Japan, the U.A.E., The U.K. Australia and all over the world. The Olympics would probably be dominated by Brazilians for a while. But the idea only having one or two countries send teams is wrong.

Right now Rio is on the short list to host the 2016 summer games. If Brazil gets to host the Olympics, there is a good chance we will see BJJ as part of the games. Judo was added to the games when Japan hosted the games in 1964. And just look at how Judo has grown. It is one of the most popular events at the summer games.

|||I heard somewhere that the reason that Muay Thai was ineligible as a sport is that it had the name of a nation in it%26#039;s title. Of course, that still leaves GRECO-Roman wrestling...

I%26#039;m not sure that the Olympics will add another combat sport. And I%26#039;m not sure how appealing BJJ would actually be. Like golf, it%26#039;s fun to do, but not very exciting for spectators. Although FILA, the international wrestling body, recognizes submission wrestling, so maybe that will make it one day.|||the problem is most of you dont want to hear the truth about why it%26#039;s not going to be in the olympics, you think that because you want it there is good enough. well it%26#039;s not. there are a lot of reason why it%26#039;s not in the olympics and wont be for several decades if your lucky.

jake mentioned only one which is a critical point too.

besides all the rules that would have to be add, and also like not a legitimate sport or not being standardized worldwide.

bjj, mma and ufc have a long way to go and many decades to go through, before they become an olympic event.|||There%26#039;s really no global BJJ governing body to begin with and the number of BJJ practitioners are simply too tiny in comparison with judokas and wrestlers. How many countries can actually participate in BJJ if it were an Olympic event? One or two if you%26#039;re lucky. You%26#039;ll be looking at the same bunch of people from ADCC, Brazil, Pride and UFC. That%26#039;s not exactly global participation.|||BJJ wascreated from Judo so adding it as an olympic sport is kind of redundant. I realize that a lot of alterations were made though.

That being said, the points made above are the final nails in the coffin for this idea. There isn%26#039;t much interest in it (compared to Judo) on a global scale.

I don%26#039;t think it will be added any time soon if ever.|||Jake Lo makes some good points. It is not popular enough, plus the other things he said.

Also remember there are sports that have been waiting to get in the olympics far longer then BJJ haseven been known outside of Brazil. It would not be very fair to them to push BJJ in, just because a few fans think it would be good.|||I would like to see it, but I think that becuase there is Judo and Wrestling, another grappling style may not be added. Hopefully MMA gets added.
