Where can I find a listing of Black Belts in Traditional Japanese Jujitsu?

two very good answers.

real koryu (old school) jujutsu does not have belt ranks. so it%26#039;s somewhat questionable as to whether or not the jujutsu you%26#039;re referring to is in fact, all that traditional. it could be traditional yes, but not necessarily all that old.

one problem with this is that people have very different definitions of what makes an art traditional. aikido is not very old, but it is very traditional. judo is also traditional and is not very old.

it would help to know why you are asking. are you looking for an old acquaintance? are you looking for a school in your area? etc

many people call what they do traditional jujutsu, when it is not. beware of that.

of course being non traditional does not mean it%26#039;s not good.|||Many traditional JJ schools - including in general the genuine koryu schools - don%26#039;t have belt ranks. Belts are a modern institution which began with Judo, so styles which predate Judo (1860s) probably won%26#039;t have them.

EDITING to clarify/correct. Judo began in the 1880s. However, the 1860s were the time of the Meiji Restoration, when the Shogunate was abolished and the samurai class effectively died out. Only martial arts which predate this are considered %26#039;koryu%26#039; (literally means %26#039;old school). Styles created or synthesized later are called %26#039;gendai budo%26#039;. Koryu jujutsu styles do not have belt ranks.|||There are many different organizations, Some good, some not. I don%26#039;t think you are going to find one place that will list all Black Belts in Traditional Japanese Jujitsu. Best thing to do is look up the dojo website and see what lineage they claim, then contact the organization or check out their website. Still a very good chance not to find who you might be looking for.
