What's the difference between jujitsu, judo, and sambo?

Judo was originally created as a sport in which you get points for throws and takedowns, like wrestling. Thus, the emphasis in Judo is on learning to throw your opponent in a variety of ways. It is also an effective martial art for self-defense because it teaches chokes and joint locks. It was based on traditional Japanese Jujitsu (which was the unarmed martial art of the Samurai).

Jujitsu does not emphasize throws. It teaches basic takedowns, but generally jujitisu fighters are not as good at takedowns as someone who has studied Judo (or wrestling). Jujitsu focuses on chokes and joint locks from the top and bottom position.

I don%26#039;t know much about Sambo, other than it is Russian, based on Judo, and involves a little more striking than Judo or Jujitsu.|||About the same as the difference between biff, bam and whallop..|||I%26#039;m not sure about sambo, but Jujitsu is the original empty handed fighting style of Samurai in Feudal Japan. After the Samurai were outlawed (see that Tom Cruise movie for a representation of that era) Kenjitsu and Jujitsu (sword work and hand work) were replaced by %26quot;do%26quot; which were for the cultivation of the Japanese citizen for functioning in modern society. Judo is to Jujitsu what Kendo is to Kenjitsu.

In other words, the goal of Jujitsu is killing people in combat, and is to teach a warrior class, while Judo is for everyone and it%26#039;s goal is the development of a persons best qualities, and ultimately toward enlightenment. (though both develop good qualities often)
